I have been reading the very useful info on the CTB. I now have some quotes and need input from real owners and users.For a TC25 with 7308 FEL - rear tires filled for ballast, remote outlet, and 5' Bush Hog rotary cutter - 14250.For a TC29 same setup - 15750.The advantage of the TC29 is 4 horsepower and a Live PTO capability.After some thought I asked for a quote on the TC25D with Super Steer and price becomes 16450 same setup. So for 700 more than the TC29 I get the D features including Live PTO, HST, goodies, super steer, sensitrak, etc. The loss from the TC29 is 4.8 HP at the PTO. I already have a Agco Allis 60 HP tractor and equipment for heavy duty applications including a 406 Bush Hog for land clearing.Help - users of HST and super steer are they OK and worth the Money????

It seems your big work can be done with the Allis, but you don't have a loader for it. To mow a lawn with the normal [non super-steer] you should test drive it for it's turning ability. ....

I would definitely go with the HST.
I have had several compact tractors and the last to have been HST I will never go back to a gear shift.

I forgot to say that my Allis has a loader. Also, the TC comes equipped with R4 tires. I hope to go and test drive today or tomorrow. My wife wants to use this one as she is afraid of the bigger Allis. Based on that and other info from CTB, I am leaning towrds the TC25D with Super steer. The quotes seem to be in line with others mentioned on CTB. I live near a metro area so compact tractors are scarse to find used and expensive.

Bill, I'd say you have three good tractor choices and the prices are very close. I'd go with the one that your wife likes when you both go to drive them. Both HST vs gears work just fine. Its a personal choice. Let us know what you think after the test drive. ....

HST is highly recommended. Especially for mowing and loader work. Will anyone else be using the machine? My wife and kids look forward to using my Kubota L3710, that would not be the case if they had to clutch and shift. Infinite speed control is nice for tilling and snowblowing. I've had gears and will not go back. ....

There are a couple of relevant threads in the archives that can be found by searching for 'super steer' and 'boomer steering.' Some issues such as scuffing, ground-clearance and loader and mid-mower compatibility are mentioned. I usually hear rave reviews about Super Steer from people who do a lot of finish mowing--I guess stable cleaning would be another good use. It seems that Super Steer definitely makes a machine more nimble, which can save a lot of time maneuvering and cut down on trimming. I don't know how common maintenance problems are with super steer systems, but it is something else that can break. I didn't notice finish mowing in the list of uses, so maybe a think-through about how much time a Super Steer option would save might be good. The type of tire also wasn't mentioned, but it might be good to think through whether the tractor will ever be used for finish mowing or have to cross lawns. The desirability of loaded rear tires also might be considered from this perspective. Off the top of my head, I'd say that nimble and something the rest of the family would like and use seem pretty important considerations, especially since there a 60HP tractor available to speed up the power work. A lot of people like HST, and even I might give my gears sometimes when I have a lot of loader work. I guess I'd think through the Super Steer option in terms of the work the tractor has to do now and might do in the future. Super Steer really seems to be about saving time when tight maneuvering is required (and maybe turf tearing as well). Who knows, the tractor may seldom have to be turned tight, and there may be no turf to tear? Car and truck buyers might think in terms of resale value when considering options, but that probably isn’t relevant to many tractor owners. ....
